Faculty Director
Professor Bradley Hyman
Dr. Hyman joined the UCR Biology Department faculty in 1983, and has been active in our local Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) schools since that time. He has served as a member of School Site Councils at Emerson Elementary School, University Heights Middle School, and John W. North High School. Dr. Hyman was an active member of the team that led to WASC re-accreditation for John W. North High School. During the RUSD Measure B school bond vote, he served as director of the Emerson-University Heights-John W. North cluster “get-out-the-vote” campaign, and now is Vice Chair of the Citizen’s Oversight Committee that oversees appropriate dispersal of Measure B funds. He holds an invitational membership on the Superintendent’s RUSD Key Communicators Network. Dr. Hyman judges local science fairs and appears before the RUSD District’s Board of Trustees to express opinions regarding pending boundary issues and curricular decisions regarding mathematics/science content. One of Dr. Hyman’s favorite off-campus activities is to return each Spring to John W. North High School as an evaluator for their Senior Exhibition Day. He is an active member of UCR’s Copernicus Project where he is helping to write curricula for science teacher credentialing and also developed an enrichment workshop entitled “A Living Punnet Square” as part of the 2005 Copernicus Summer Science Institute for Biology Teachers. This exercise became an “In-Service Day” workshop for all RUSD Biology Teachers and is also being adopted for teacher training sessions in surrounding school districts. Staff Director
Leslie Bushong
Ms. Leslie Bushong is an alumna of UC Riverside. She earned her multiple-subject teaching credential at UC Irvine. Since her return to UC Riverside in 1997, she has continued her passion for teacher education. During her tenure as the professional academic advisor for UCR's Mathematics Department, she created and developed advising resources and techniques to prepare undergraduate mathematics students interested in teaching mathematics. She also implemented the Subject Matter Preparation Program for mathematics and served on the steering committee that proposed UCR’s former Mathematics Blended Program. As an experienced academic advisor in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, she is prepared and well-versed in advising and preparing science and mathematics pre-teacher candidates for their future careers in teaching. Shortly after she assumed her present position, work to develop a Science and Mathematics Integrated Teaching Program at UCR began.

Administrative Assistant
Allison Clark
Ms. Allison Clark is the newest addition to the California Teach Science/Mathematics Initiative team. She graduated from UCR in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. She returned to UCR a short 6 months after graduation to become an Administrative Assistant in the SMI program. She very excited about the opportunity to work with students who are preparing to become science and mathematics teachers. Her role as Administrative Assistant is to provide support for the growing SMI office as well as answer any general questions students might have about the CaTeach-SMI program.

Copernicus Project Community Liaison
Kenisha Williams
Coming from the UCLA School of Engineering, Ms. Williams became part of the Copernicus Project in Graduate School of Education in 2007. She is an alumna of UCR and received her degree in Biological Sciences. Ms. Williams is the Community Liaison for the Copernicus Project and serves as Field Placement Officer for SMI as part of her duties. She has years of experience in K-20 STEM education and is dedicated to the academic advancement of students.

SMI Master Teacher
Janet Brown
Ms. Janet Brown received her Bachelor of Arts degree and teaching credential from UC Riverside. She earned her Master's degree from the University of Redlands. She has taught and served as an academic coach at both the elementary and secondary (mathematics) levels in Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) for the last 20 years. For nine years, Ms. Brown served as a mentor teacher, working with new teachers as they began their careers with the district. She also served as a cooperating teacher for the UCR Graduate School of Education, working with college students in the teaching credential program. Later, Ms. Brown became a mathematics and science coach for the Title 1 Program at Chemawa Middle School where she worked with the two departments to improve teaching practices. Currently, Ms. Brown is the Staff Development Specialist in Mathematics with RUSD where she provides in-services and coaching for secondary mathematics teachers at the district level. Ms. Brown is scheduled to teach SMI's courses, EDUC 3 in and EDUC 4 , in 2008-09 academic year.
